Velna klēpis (Velna grāvis) (Devil’s Lap (Devil’s Ditch))

The seemingly inexplicable, legendary rock formation on the Nāruža River is an amazing and photogenic stopping point for all vacationers!

Velna klēpis or Velna grāvis is a 100 m long and up to 30 m wide accumulation of stones in the bed of the Nāruža river on the border of Ērgļi and Ogre municipalities. It was formed when the riverbed broke through a rocky moraine, creating a valley with steep slopes. The drop of the river in this section is 4-5 m and the river itself mostly flows under rocks. The place tends to be more spectacular in the spring.
The place is attractive to visitors of different ages.
The space is available for small groups, but not suitable for large vehicles.
Two legends exist about the origin of the place. One says that in ancient times one night the devil carried stones in his apron. Suddenly, a rooster crowed, and the devil's stones fell directly into the river. That's how the name of this place came about. The other legend says that in the old days, a fisherman made a path in the river and laid nets. Then he lit a fire and fried the fish. The devil came and asked the fisherman to give him fish too. The fisherman did not give him fish. Then the devil got angry: "I will fill the river with stones so that the waters return to the marshes". Before the fisherman could say anything, the stones started falling like hail.
