The source of Gauja River

It’s no secret that the Vidzeme highlands are the place where the well-known Gauja River starts its path above ground!

In the past, it was believed that the Gauja starts from Lake Alauksta. However, since the ancient source of Gaujiņa Alauksta has overgrown due to the lowering of the water level, today the beginning of the Gauja is considered to be Ežupīte or Ārnīte, which begins here, at the foot of Elka hill. The starting point of the river is marked with an expressive sign and a resting place. It can be reached by a path from the Elka hill farm. From its top there is a magnificent view over the outskirts of Vidzeme.
On Elka Hill there is a farm that offers charming accommodation with breath-taking views, outdoor dining and nature workshops for groups. Read more about the Elka Hill farm here, on the "Vidzemēs" website.
