The ruins of the Orthodox Church of the Holy Cross Raising in Tolka

One of the few Orthodox churches in Vidzeme, Tolka Church, although in ruins, still creates a remarkable image and is a great, unusual stopping point. Please be careful near the ruins.

The place is available for small groups. The road may not be suitable for larger vehicles.
The settlement was formed around the former center of the Tolka manor (Tolkenhof). The congregation of the church was founded in 1848. From 1906 to 1911, Bishop Alexander (Adams Vitols) served in the church. Until 1938, priest P. Stūrītis served here. In 1944, during the Second World War, this church was bombed, an artillery shell hit it.
The Church of the Holy Cross Raising in Tolka was built in 1876-1878 according to the project of the German architect Robert August Pflug, who was one of the most outstanding architects of the second half of the 19th century. The Church of the Holy Cross Raising in Tolka was one of more than 10 Orthodox churches built according to Pflug's designs.
