Birāni mill waterfall

One of the best-kept secrets of the Vidzeme highlands, the Birāni mill waterfall is a beautiful stop to appreciate the harmony of nature and former industry.

Only the sluices of the former mill on the River Arona remain today. It is located in a picturesque place in the middle of the forest and forms an interesting waterfall; the locals called it "Arona's cascade".
The place is suitable for small groups. There is a small parking lot next to the mill.
The Birāni mill was one of the six mills on the River Arona. It was built in the spring of 1924 with the aim of producing electricity for the needs of the city of Madona, the dam was also built in the autumn of the same year. In 1956, mill equipment for grain cleaning, coarse grinding, "grinding", "dehulling" and sifting through began to be placed in the power plant building. As a result of collectivisation in 1967, the mill ended its operation. In the 1980s and 1990s, the mill began to be rebuilt into a hotel and recreation complex with a sauna and a gym. After the restoration of Latvia's independence, privatization began, as a result of which the Birāni mill became private property and the construction of the recreation complex stopped. Remains of the started construction can still be found in the area.
Birāni mill waterfall does not freeze and is beautiful even in winter when the weather is right. A dirt road leads to the mill through the forest, so please check the suitability of the vehicle in the off-season.
