Madona Local History and Art Museum

The museum in Madona is one of the central memory institutions of the Vidzeme highlands. It offers one of the widest collections of exhibits, as well as a range of exhibitions and museum pedagogy events in all of Latvia!

The museum is an ideal place to get acquainted with the ancient ethnographic objects of farm and craft tools. During the lessons, you can learn about the work of an archaeologist, the work of a restorer in a museum, and participate in a monotype graphic workshop. Visitors are introduced to the traditions of making and wearing folk costumes in the Madona region and their use today. Visitors can get acquainted with the ancient ways of constructing buildings, etc.
The museum is well suited for families with children. Several museum pedagogy classes are available, specially adapted for the youngest visitors. Students have the opportunity to learn about the professions employed/involved/operating/in the museum - (historian, custodian of collections, hall supervisor, restorer, art exhibition organizer, educational worker, museum manager, economic worker, artist, etc.
The museum is open to a large number of visitors. Special lessons with a museum-pedagogical program are available for up to 20 participants for both school-age children and adults. The museum is located in the center of Madona. You can easily drive up and find a parking space for larger vehicles.
Founded in 1944, the museum collects, stores and exhibits materials about the history, culture and art of Madona city and county. A permanent exhibition on the archaeology of the county is available for viewing. The largest finds of the Middle and Late Stone Age in Latvia come from the vicinity of Lubāns Lake in the east of Madona municipality. The museum regularly hosts various thematic and art exhibitions. A collection of regional ethnographic materials is available during the summer period. Visitors have the opportunity to use the museum's scientific library. City and district tours are available.
In 1984, the granary of the former Birżu manor, built of boulders, was restored, and spacious art exhibition halls were added to it (Skolas iela 10a). Located in the center of Madona urban area.
The museum is open and easily accessible at any time of the year.
