Krīgaļi Mill

Once it was the proudest water mill in Latvia. Nowadays this industrial heritage facility has preserved almost all the equipment that has been used since peacetime!

A small nature trail has been created around the territory. The water mill is located in a scenic area on Mergupe. A swimming place and fishing are available.
Currently, all equipment and mechanisms are in working order. Here you can grind flour, semolina and groats. There is equipment for grain cleaning and wool carding. Upon prior application, tours are available accompanied by the mill manager and horticulturist Pēteras Blates, introducing the history and operating principles of the mill, as well as the operation of the Krīgaļi HPP, established in 1997. He will also show the storage of old items, which is located on the second floor of the mill. Read more about Peteris in the "Human Stories" section.

The place is suitable for small groups.
The water mill was built on Mergupe in 1938. Experts say that in 1936, the owner of the mill - a miller from Riga - took a loan of half a million lats from "Latvijas Bank" in order to build the most modern mill in Latvia at that time. He built it in less than two years. This mill has survived to this day, and miraculously it was almost untouched by World War II. The mill was part of a collective farm during the years of Soviet occupation. The last bags of flour were ground in the mill in the early 2000s, when a farmer brought just four bags of grain.
