The territory is surrounded by forests. A wild garden with many beautiful angles has been cultivated around the mill. The place is especially beautiful in autumn.
Gusts Mednis – the great-grandfather of the current owner Jānis Mednis bought the land on the shores of the river Viešupīte from the baron of Lauteres. Gusts had dug a mill pond on the river and built the Kučuri mill in 1876. Since then, with a break during the Soviet period, the mill has been managed by the Mednis family. Already in 2001, Daina and Jānis joined the "Rural Traveller" association and on June 29, a year after the closing of the mill, welcomed the first customers to the small rural sauna. Read more about the Mednis family in the "Human stories" section.
Up to 70 people can be accommodated in the complex including additional places.
Kučuru mill was built in 1876. The Mednis family was engaged in grain milling and gutter services here until 1949. On March 25, 1949, the Mednis family was sent to Siberia, to the Amur region near the Zeya River. In 1954, Jānis Mednis died in Siberia, while his wife was pregnant with his youngest son Jānis Mednis. In 1957, Olga returned to Latvia with 4 children, but not to her mill due to government policy. In 1990, Jānis Mednis rights to his father's property were restored and a farm with a land area of 40.9 ha was established. The careful grinding of grain and splitting of groats took place until the year 2000, until the small mill, unable to compete with the large ones, ceased its activity in order to start its journey in the tourism industry in 2001.
We offer a guest house and 3 houses, suitable for larger groups and families, as well as romantic couples. A wood-fired wet sauna is available for guests. This sauna is located on the edge of the large mill pond. The offer also includes a sauna, which is located in a holiday house, on the edge of a small pond. Fishing is also available in the mill pond, which has carp, pike, bream, and other fish.
Kučuru mill specializes in organizing wedding celebrations, but also sets banquet tables. A party menu is available. The hall can be used for up to 50 people in winter and up to 100 people in summer. A holiday cottage hall for up to 10 people is also available.
For those interested, we offer the chance to see the mill built by Gustavus Mednis and its equipment. The mill operated until 2000, currently the mill gangways have been preserved and a museum of ancient things has been opened.
