Lake Talejas and the devil’s stone

Lake Talejas and its devil’s stone is a calm and magical place to stop and relax while exploring the rich offer of the Vidzeme highlands.

Talejas Lake is one of the highest lakes in Latvia. It is included in Gaiziņkalns nature park. The average depth of the lake is 6.5 m, and the maximum depth is 15.6 meters. Around the lake there is a picturesque, rather homogeneous landscape, which is most beautiful in summer and autumn.
There is a large stone, several cubic meters in size at Talejas lake, near the source of the river. On the surface of the stone there is a deep footprint of a giant's bare foot. The legend says that the devil once got very angry with the people of Vestieni and decided to dam the Talejas River so that the surrounding inhabitants would drown. At night, he took a huge stone and carried it through the air to dam the river. The stone turned out to be too heavy for the devil, he couldn't carry it all the way to the river, so he put it on the edge of the lake to rest. Standing with one foot on a stone, the devil wiped his sweat. However, the devil was huge and so heavy that his foot got stuck in the stone. At that moment, the rooster crowed and thwarted the evil intention of the devil. The devil escaped and ran away, but the stone remained where it was thrown. You can still see a deep footprint of a bare foot in it.
