Ruins of Vestiena Lutheran Church

Even though it burned down already half a century ago, the church in Vestiena does not intend to give up, becoming a pleasant, optimally maintained object in a historical settlement. Please observe safety and caution in the vicinity of the building.

The church is located in a picturesque area with a relief and is surrounded by a large park. Next to the church there is one of the most famous lakes in the Vidzeme highlands – Kāla Lake.
The place can be visited in small groups.
In 1590, the first wooden church was built on the shore of Lake Kāla. In the 17th century, the first stone church was built in its place, and in 1744, the third in a row, the current church, was built. The church can still be seen in its full glory in the feature film "Mērnieku laiki" (1968) by the Riga Film Studio. However, even before the last fire in 1974, the church had already been vandalized and stood open, but still with intact walls, windows, and doors. The church was not restored after the fire.
