Meņģeļi – Jurjāni Brothers Memorial Museum

In the heart of the Vidzeme highlands, there is “Meņģeļi” – a house where the legendary family of musicians Jurjāni started to live at the beginning of the 19th century.

The museum is located in a scenic area that is beautiful at any time of the year, on the shore of the picturesque Pulgošņa lake, and occupies 8.6 ha. The objects of the Song and Dance Festival of 1998 "Dziesmu kalns" and "Gaismas ritenis" can be viewed in the ancient homestead. Find more about Pulgosnis here, on the "Vidzemēs" website.
The museum preserves and popularizes the creative heritage of the Jurjāni brothers, emphasizing the role of the living environment, regional traditions, historical events and personalities in the creation and maintenance of this heritage. Through its activities, the museum promotes the interest of the residents of Ērgļi municipality in continuing the traditions of education, choral singing, music making and weaving. The museum offers the chance to see the exhibition "Brothers Jurjāni - founders of Latvian music"; "Barn – brothers' summer residence and weaving workshop" and "19th century ethnographic agricultural tools". There is an opportunity to participate in the lessons of the museum educational programs "Let's weave!", "Tie your bath broom" and "Let's learn about wind instruments in the museum".
A place is suitable for visitors of different generations. The museum has several museum pedagogy programs that are engaging for children and young people.
The place is available for group visits and tours by prior application.
Four Jurjāni brothers were born in this homestead – Pēteris (1851–1900), Andrejs (1856–1922), Juris (1861–1940) and Pāvuls (1866–1948), who became the founders of Latvian music culture. The memorial museum was founded in 1990.
