The nature reserve "Lubāna mitrājs" is the largest inland wetland in Latvia. It was founded in 2009, combining 12 nature reserves and creating a complex, specially protected natural area. The complex features outstanding biotopes specially protected in Latvia and the European Union, as well as rich and diverse flora and fauna. The unique habitat diversity of the Lubāna wetland complex is determined by its geographical location. Habitats characteristic of different climatic zones are bordered here. There are river floodplain meadows, intact high marshes, marshy forests, boreal (northern) forests, black alder meadows and park-like meadows, etc. Lake Lubāna and fishponds are one of the most important resting and feeding places for passing water birds in the country. It is a nesting place for 29 European specially protected bird species – the lesser spotted eagle, the white-tailed eagle, the whooper swan, the corn crake and the great snipe. It is a place where several globally endangered bird species can be found – the great snipe, the corn crake, the white-tailed eagle and the osprey.
The information center offers orientation games, tours, boat trips on the Aiviekste river and fishing activities. The information center provides several routes for pedestrians, cyclists and runners around Lubāna and the surrounding area.
The information center offers various services for vacationers, fishermen, hunters and other guests of the information center. Tourist guides, binoculars for bird and landscape observation, and an orientation game around the information center are available in the center. The offer includes information about the natural complex, its natural values and cultural history as well as the organization of hikes and guide services.
The place is suitable for visitors of different ages. The offer and activities are very suitable for children and young people.
